Rem 14 1/2 44-40 - Need Help

Post by seacar »

Am looking at a Remington 14 1/2 from about 1913? (C201XX) in 44-40. Bore in excellent condition along with condition of the rifle. It is a Canadian proofed rifle, however my concern is that the bolt and butt stock are wrong for what it should be. Would like some confirmation either way, would be happy to answer any more questions.

Tbury gave you the right information! The bolt has been jeweled but maybe the owner thought it would go well with that "exotic" stock! Other than that the rifle looks to be pretty much all original and correct.

You could readily buff out the "jeweling" on the bolt and find a decent stock with a metal shotgun buttplate. I have actually found it easier and usually less expensive to buy a "clunker" for parts than bid like crazy on a stock/buttplate.

Nice gun, they are great shooters!

Got to disagree with the butt plate. For the serial number, the most common would have been hard rubber (standard) or a smooth steel crescent. The hard rubber would would have the UMC Logo. The steel shotgun was around but not predominate especially in the 14-1/2 at that time period of production.

Jim
You will find the hard rubber well into the 30000 serial numbers. As with all Remington changes, they used their stock up as they went. If you get a chance, talk to Tom Hemphill about his survey. It shows a good time line for the hard rubber plate. Ken will tell you the dates for the changes are not exact but Tom's life work (survey), along with the catalogs are the best sources I know.

Very interesting information gents! The blueing I feel is better than that second pic shows, unfortunately sometimes the flash on the digital camera makes old guns look even worse than they really are. Don't get me wrong however, I still wouldn't classify it as a 90% blue, probably around an 80%.

I didn't get a pic of the buttplate, but was told it was the steel shotgun plate with the Rem UMC mark/logo on it. Adapted from the original rifle??? I dunno, I assume all the DCP guns came the same.

I have seen DCP with all three plates. Remington had to fill the order quickly, so they were put together with what was on hand.

Ah yea, that makes sense, especially with the 'quick, quick, now' orders.

Finally got the Halfer home last night. Berrel is pristine and the thing shoots quite well, except it seems to have a tendency to 'gum' up a bit once in a while. The more I look at it and pump it I don't think its just crud, but possibly a matter of construction?

For instance, if you don't make sure to fully pump it back all the way, it will seem to hang up. Sometimes you have to throw the pump forward just a wee bit too 'unlock' the bolt as well after a pull of the trigger.

Revisiting the blue again, its not 80% either

Am looking at a replacement buttstock from a certain manufacturer, which would be correct, pistol grip or straight grip?
