My 12-gauge The Sportsman has a 1936 Sportsman serial number and a barrel date code PE P = June E = 1936 and is just as you describe The Sportsman on the left side of the receiver and the one-bird roll-stamping.

From the pictures of 20-gauge The Sportsman I've saved, 9869 has the 3-bird roll-stamping and 11899 has 1-bird. "The Sportsman" moves to the bolt with the change from separate The Sportsman serial numbers to the Model 11 serial numbers which was for 20-gauges the best I can read the old ledger page February 4, 1938.

Thanks researcher, would the 119xx serial be consistent with 1933?

On another note, any ideas on who made the comp? I have what I believe is a spreader and 2 full or extra full choke extensions, one has 2 dots, the other appears to have had a stamp that was polished away but is not readable. The spreader(?) has no discernable marks. Tried to attach some photos, but tech challenged. Thanks again.

There were a lot of choke devices marketed from the 1930s into the 60s. The most often seen "comp" types were of course the Cutts Compensator --

Lesser known was the KOMP-CHOKE by Kessler --
