Model 722 in .244

Post by bigswede00 »

Good afternoon,

I have come across a Model 722 in .244 Remington that has me scratching my head. The date code on the barrel is "CA" this would be April 1954. My question is would Remington have made a rifle chambered in .244 that early? We have all been told that the .244 was introduced in 1955. It has a 26 inch barrel of heavier contour than my 722 in .222. Thoughts?

Dates can be fudged a bit. Your date code is when the ''barrel'' was made, not necessarily the receiver nor a complete rifle. "Made'' and offered to public are not the same.

May we see a picture of the barrel date code and the first 3 digits of the serial number?

I'm really impressed with what you shared. Therefore, seeing the code “April 1954” on the barrel doesn't entirely contradict the information that the .244 Remington was introduced around 1955.

401XXX would be likely late 1956 or into early 57. Quite possibly a re-barrel. Are the sights nice and level?
