Remington 1858 ID

Trying to identify and age a Remington ball and cap revolver, 8" barrel that I got from my grandfather who traded for it many years ago. I have had it for ~60 years. No telling how long he had it. Numbers on the underside of the barrel is 102o23, D on the left side of barrel, P and C on the cylinder, and N on the right side of the frame.

Any help would be appreciated.

From the serial number of 102023 but no photo, my opinion is that you have a New Model, 1858 Army percussion revolver, 44 caliber. According the estimate of author Don Ware, that gun was manufactured in October, 1865. Since that is past the conclusion of the Civil War, it was likely not inspected by the US Ordnance department and sold instead on the civilian market. The serial number is stamped also on the frame under the left grip panel, and, on the hidden tang of the trigger guard (remove one small screw). Matching numbers would confirm the revolver was not pieced together later from parts. These higher serial numbered revolvers are often in very good condition and sought after by collectors and shooters. Please post some photos.

If it was accepted by the Army it should have a final inspectors cartouche stamped on the left grip.

Very NICE! I don't see a final inspectors cartouche on the left grip so I assume it was sold on the civilian market. To determine if all serial numbers match you need to remove the trigger guard to observe the serial number stamped on the tab.

Removed the trigger guard and found no serial number stamped on the frame or guard. Not sure what the tab is that you reference.

Sorry about poor photo quality. I think it reads 63432 and unfortunately does not match frame.

Can you send photo of name and address line on top of barrel?

Not sure what numbers you posted for your tab, but the guard tab on this gun has no numbers. Top of the barrel is stamped:

The numbers are the serial number. Sadly when the armory repaired or refreshed weapons they did not always match parts to the original weapon. They just grabbed the part needed.

Civilian models offen did not have the S/N stamped. Somestimes a letter was used. Given that, I feel yours is a civilian issue.

The trigger doesn't seem to be in the right position - there might be something broke inside. It's not hard to take these revolvers apart.
