Remington 1875 - No barrel address

Post by pbrowne »

I have a Remington 1875 serial 10234 with no barrel address. Should this be a concern? The Remington is in very good condition and looks all original with consistent patina. Obviously an early model with pinched post front sight and no calibre markings. I can post more pics later if needed.

Hi Pbrowne,

No bbl address may or may not be a concern. Without seeing some pic of the bbl there is no way to know if the bbl wasn't marked, or if it was buffed off. If not marked it's no big deal. Unusual, but not that important. If it has been buffed off, then the value drops. Do the serial numbers all match? There will be one on the bbl, under the ejector assembly, and another on the trigger guard tab.

No caliber marking means that it's in 44 Remington, a 44 center fire that was only used in Rem guns. It was unpopular so Rem started making them all in 44-40, with a very few, rare guns in 45 Colt.

Please do post some more pic, of the bbl, and the frame and cylinder.

Thanks aardq. Further scrutiny does show a faint barrel address, especially with sun glint or with jeweler's loupe.

Any ideas on supplies of .44 Remington BP cartridges?

Hi Peter,
Good luck on finding any 44 Remington cartridges. The last one I got took five years to find it and cost $65. There should not be a serial number on the under side of the barrel. The 1875 should have the serial number on the frame under the left grip, on the trigger guard tab and on the loading gate.

Thanks Bill. I did look on the loading gate, but may have missed it. Would it be on the inside of the gate?

It's on the tab that allows the gate to pivot. You will probably only see a couple of numbers because you have a five digit serial number.

Sorry for the mis-info on serial location. Don't know why I thought that. Bill is right on the locations.

Hello Pbrowne,

44 Remington Dies are available at CH4D.
I think 44 Remington CF could be formed from 44 Colt,
which is available from Starline.
Bullet mold is available from Old West Bullet Molds.
I'm not sure if the 44 Colt Crimp Die would work with the 44 Rem CF.
Hereis what I have for case dimensions.

I'd verify chamber before doing anything.

Hope this helps, AntiqueSledMan.
