Help on Rem. 141 rear peep sight
Re: Help on Rem. 141 rear peep sight
I have had no trouble using 6X48 fillister head screws from Forster or even Brownell and I keep a huge supply of all lengths.
When I say I have not trouble that doesn't mean that they fit every gun, every time. Some screw holes have been cross threaded or messed up in some way.
While 6X48 may not be the original thread size I have at least
30 14/141's that have tang sights mounted using them. Is it the length of the screw that is a problem on your gun or the thread size? If it is the length I will be glad to send you a couple 6X48 in whatever length you need.
I would also not worry about hurting the ramp on a 141, while I am not sure how they "sweated" or soldered that bloody thing on but it would take one helluva whack to move it. I have never seen a barrel without the ramp and you NEVER see those ramps at shows or for sale anywhere.

The front sight ramp is machined on the barrel, not soldered on. You cant knock it off.
Tang sight screws are 0.140x44tpi. A 6x48 screw is smaller (.130 shaft).

Hey parashoot:
The offer of the screws is still there, the 6X48 will work as I indicated.
While the matter of the ramp front is of "minor" concern, it is not part of the barrel. It is
rather a separate piece of lesser steel almost identical in composition and structure to those
used on other model Remington front ramps that have the screw under the dovetail. As I indicated, it would take a substantial blow to dislodge it, but in theory it is possible. If anyone is actually interested I have a picture of a front ramp on a barrel stub that I cut into, the back end of the ramp came off showing clearly that it had been sweated on. For info!

I ground one off a 141. There was no seam. I would like to see that picture.
The 6x48s will cross thread into the hole because they are undersized. Better to get the correct ones here: http://www.aperturesnmore.com/category.sc?categoryId=31

No war, it is just that I work on these guns every day correcting others mistakes!
My understanding is that Tom has sent you some screws
The front ramp thing is actually interesting, if "Rickster" will give me his email address I will send him the picture and if he wishes the pieces of the ramp as well.

You can attach your pictures to this thread by using the browse button near the bottom of the scroll page. Maybe others would also like to see your front sight.

Nambu Jim is absolutely correct. I have taken off two front ramps on 141s and it is exactly like he said. His picture shows it all.

Re: Help on Rem. 141 rear peep sight
Thank you for the picture.
So, are you saying that all 141 ramps were soldered on? Or could there have been a period when they were machined?
And what do you say about 14 ramps? And the under lugs? I have not messed with those.
For future reference, how hot did you have to get it? That is, was it soft solder or silver solder?
FWIW. My recollection is that I attempted to unsolder the one I transplanted. And when it wouldn't unsolder, I chose to grind it off. Or more accurately, I chose to grind the barrel stub off the ramp such that the ramp could be reused. I was in the process of shortening an abused 141. I ground far enough that a solder seam should have shown, but I don't recall seeing one. But that has been more than a few projects ago.
Do we all agree that .140x44 is the correct tang sight screw spec?

Enough? As in shush?
Look, I am here to exchange information, and I would like it to be as accurate as possible. If someone validates what I post, great. And if they can show that I am in error, I am happy to suffer a little embarrassment if that is what it takes to get the facts straight.
Regarding my questions above... Unless someone corrects me, here is what I understand to be factual.
The underlug bosses are machined on 14s and 141s. The 14 sight ramps are machined. The preponderance of evidence indicates the 141 ramps are soldered. This change was presumably made to save money. The type of solder is unknown. The tang sight screws are .140x44.

Re: Help on Rem. 141 rear peep sight
I decided to do some investigation for myself. Here is what I found.
The source of the specs I posted tells me that the information originally came from an instruction note contained in a Marbles tang sight box.
I checked 8 of my Pedersen rifles: 12s, 25s, 14s and 141s. Some have Marble tang sights. Some have Lyman tangs sights. Some have original filler screws. I also checked screws that came with two spare sights I got from online auctions. I also checked some miscellaneous screws I had laying around.
I didn’t have a 44tpi thread gauge, so I made a 0.137x44 screw in my lathe. I used this screw to check holes and to check the tread pitch on various screws.
The screws in the rifles and the spare sights were all 44tpi. The diameters ranged from 0.134 to 0.140. The 0.140 dia screw came with one of the spare sights. It was a very (too) tight fit.
All heads had flat (not beveled) bottoms.
6x48 scope mount screws would thread in fairly easily for a couple of turns and then tighten up as the threads bind. Also, screws from old Weaver scope rings will almost fit, but bind also. Those seem to be 6x46.
Bottom line, screws measuring 0.137in dia x 44tpi fit the best.
