Hi everyone!
I am new to the board so please go easy.
I am looking to purchase a Model 31 Riot. It maybe US Military model, but I know very little about it. I am looking for a good home defence shotgun and like the idea that it has some age on it. The action does appear to function properly and is smooth. Any info on the history and possible value would be appreciated.
Here are the details.
Barrell - has serial # 57XXX. has CYL stamped on it and also has AL and what I believe to be an anchor stamped near the receiver. The barrell is just over 20" in length.
Receiver - Has serial # 59XXX and is not marked US Property.
Buttstock - The stock is stamped on the side with the Double Cannon.

Re: Model 31 Riot Help
The AL on the barrel is probably the Remington date code - A = March, L = 1942. However, the old factory ledger paqe for the 12-gauge Model 31s ends with June 30, 1942 when they were at serial number 40655?!?

These guns that were in government service have had so many things done to them over the years it is hard to prove much of anything. I have a Model 31, 1934 series, with R.L.B. and the flaming bomb on the receiver, which carries a serial number that dates it to September/October 1940. The gun has a barrel with a date code of BK which is January 1941, and and a serial number which puts it in December 1940. The trigger group has yet another serial number and the stock on it is one for a Model 31, 1941 series. Remarkably I shoot this assemblige of parts very well!?! My guess is that when they disassembled and cleaned these things at some armory in the long distant past, they did it enmass and didn't pay much attention to serial numbers when they reassembled them.
