Remington 30 # Marked 25 Roberts

Post by farmallh »

I have a Remington 30 S marked 25 Roberts. I found information in The complete guide to handloading by Philip B Sharpe speaks to the difference of the 25 Roberts and 257 Roberts. "Remington changed the taper of the shoulder so the 257 cartridge cannot be shot in a rifle chambered for the 25 Roberts. It was first produced as the 25 Roberts but Captain E C Crossman insisted to
release it that way would invite severe complications; he suggested the
change in name to 257 Roberts which Remington immediately accepted."

I fired a new 257 Roberts in the 30 Express and also in a Remington
722. Both brass appear identical after firing. I did this on the suggestion
of my gunsmith as I had fired many 257 Roberts prior to this from the 30
Express. As I understand the Guide to handloading a .257 Roberts will not
chamber in a 25 Roberts rifle. I believe the 30 Express was sold before they changed the name to 257 Roberts. I've has other early Remington's miss labeled. A Remington model 8 as 30-30 instead of 30 Remington for an example. The information I stated is on page 359 of the Complete Guide to Handloading by Philip B Sharpe.

Any comments or additional information to confirm or question my information is requested. Thanks

Ive always been fascinated on this subject of the 25 Roberts and the 257 Remington Roberts then the 257 Roberts. Though I have never really had time to research it to get hard facts. From what I thought the 25 roberts came first and it was closely named to a differant wildcat cartridge and they feared someone loading the wrong cartridge in the rifle and haveing a saftey issue. The same with the 30-30 Remington and the 30-30 Winchester. Ive always gave it a little effort to try to track down a model 30 with the 25 Roberts stamping, but I guess never really looked hard enough.
