1100 wont fire

Post by jason0012 »

I have an 1100 I bought in Jan. It is an older gun and shows a lot of use. I got it pretty cheap so cant complain, its well worth fixing. I took it out the first time and shot some clays, finding it the absolute best 12 ga I have ever shot. My wife even liked it! I took it home , cleaned it, put it away and didn't get to take it out again until recently. I found that it simply will not fire. The bolt cycles, feed ramp works. and the trigger/ hammer functions. The bolt is locking up properly best I can tell, but it isnt impacting a shell with enough force to dent the primer. My best guess is the firing pin, but it looks good. It is not bent, and is not broken. There is nothing binding it. I would assume that I had a gun with some components wrong, but it did work that first time! In fact, that it stopped working after I disassembled it for cleaning so it must be something I have done. Any ideas?

Can you hear and see the hammer dropping? If so, check the firing pin and firing pin spring.

Yes I can hear and see the hammer drop. The pin scratches rather than dents the primer. Which seems really strange to me.

With the bolt out, take your finger/thumb and you should easily be able to push the firing pin out the bolt face and see that it is not broken off. It should be round and smooth. The spring has to hold the firing pin to the rear so the hammer hits it firmly. If you don't have an owner's manual, go to www.remington.com, and download one. Good luck.
