1950 Model 870

Post by Sparky-mn »

Hello: I am new to this site and have a couple questions about some guns I have. I recently have started to look into some of the guns I have and I find it is quit interesting. I've used the letter marking system on this site to determine my 870 12G was made in Feb 1950, the markings on it are, L WW with a number of 4007V on the barrel, and right after where it says Model 870 it has the number 4007V so the barrel matches the gun. I called the Remington's 1-800# and the person I talk to thought since the 4007V is the only # on it and does not have a full serial # that it is a Feb 1950 by going off the other markings. So my question's are does anybody know how many were made in 1950, and were all the ones made in 1950 Wingmasters? On mine the barrel says 12 GA 2 3/4 or shorter shells followed by Full. The other side of the barrel says Remington Arms CO. INC. Ilion, N.Y. Made in USA Patent No. 2,039,814 Others pending, and below that an oval shape with REP. in it and some type of symbol following. The stock is smooth and the pump is round and ribbed. Any info would be great!!! Thank you!!!

4007V is the serial number, that is all there is to it, and it is a low one for sure. Someone at Remington has gotten confused about serial numbers on 870s and 1100s. They say there were no 1100s below 100,000, and I have had two and know two other people with them as well. Yours sounds like a stock Model ADL gun. All 870s were Wingmasters until the advent of the 'Sportsman' models in the '80s, and then the later Expresses if I remember correctly. There isn't much more to know, except they have made over 10,000,000 since yours rolled out.
What could have happened... did.
