Model 700 7mm mag identification

Post by mcnwil »

I have a 700 with 5rj12 on the barrel. I cannot determine what the date of manufacture is per the drawing on the website. Can anyone provide any information on this rifle?

As you found out the date codes can be a little tricky. Its sometimes hard to tell what letters when there are multiple to read. Post a picture and I can give you the date.

A barrel code of "R J" would indicate a date of Nov. 1962.
The stock style and low serial number also fit into that time period.

That's my assessment. I'll be waiting to see if "remington600" agrees.

Is the rest of the gun in good shape?

It is good shape, the clear finish is worn off in places and it certainly has some scratches and bumps. It has traveled allot in its life and spent allot of time in the field. I have had it since 80, I know my uncle originally ordered it. It is tight. I do not take it out any more.

Yes your gun fits with December of 1962. I agree with Wulfman. You say your uncle was the original buyer. The no. 5 is ussually stamped on the gun for an employee purchase. Did your uncle work for Remington?

Thanks for the info guys. My uncle did not work for Remington, he was a Government employee and all I remember him saying was the there were none available in Louisiana at the time and it was ordered. Was the 700 changed in this year?

No it wasnt changed. 1962 was the year the 700 was introduced. Your 700 is the ADL model.

It is my belief that the "5" in just a standard final inspectors mark. I have a '64 M600 with the "5" as well. Your 7mmMag will/should have a stainless steel barrel of 23.5" in length. The barrel will not be marked stainless but a special copper application made it possible to blue the barrel to match the action. Measure from the gas relief hole to the end of the barrel to determine its length. A nice rifle indeed; first year for the 700, 7mmMag, one of around 6000, and best of all, you have a nice rifle to use and enjoy (hint hint) with a traceable history.
