My 14s like 150gr just fine, shooting around 1.5MOA using 30 gr of 3031 (give or take a little depending on temperature), which is a fairly standard load for 30-30. I haven't tried the 170gr but I did find 10 boxes of original Remington 170gr loads on a shelf in a farm store (bought them all). Haven't tried any of them though.
According to Quickload, Benchmark and Varget will work, but are not optimum. They will give up about 100fps to 3031, which is the optimum powder for that case.
I have also had good luck with RL15.
I hope you enjoy your 14. They are nice field guns. With a little practice you can quickly learn how to eject the spent case into your right hand without removing your rifle from your shoulder. Unlike lever actions that fling the case to be forever lost as your right hand is busy working the lever.
model 14 .30 remington use 150gr or 170gr?
Re: model 14 .30 remington use 150gr or 170gr?
I too prefer using 3031 and 150gr Bullets!
What you really need to keep in mind is OACL on the reloaded ammunition, these guns are very-very fussy about this. The ideal situation is to find some old original rounds to set up your seating die.

I also have remington model 14 in 30 remington. Anyone try 130 or 125 gr. bullets in their's. If so any data you have will be appreciated.
