Can anyone help to identity this gun?

Post by Redcoat »

 Hi, I've recently aquired a Remington 12G pump action shotgun, which I have been reliably informed is a limited edition 870 wingmaster with good wood and game scenes engraved on the receiver and a poly choke. The serial number begins AUU which relates to March 1949, but research shows the wingmaster wasn't launched until 1950. Can anyone shed any light on this guns identity.

Well, it is not a Model 870 Wingmaster. Did the "reliable informant" actually see the gun, or once you said Remington pump did he make a leap of faith and think 870, and engraved spelled Wingmaster. Wrong bolt, wrong receiver, wrong barrel to magazine tube connection design, wrong trigger group - in short it is just not an 870. I know zip about the Model 17s and 31s, but if it is a Remington, I would say it has to be one of those. Someone will come along.
What could have happened... did.

It is a 1941 version Model 31. Likely started life as a plain 31A "Standard" grade. It has been fitted with a Simmons vent rib and aftermarket engraving and wood. Is that really a Poly-Choke? Looks more like a Cyclone Choke to me.

Researcher - What identifies the gun as a 41 series? Large trigger bow?

Yes. And from the picture I get a feeling that is an alloy trigger group not a steel one.
