I purchased this handgun from a friend and would like to learn more about it! He said it had been in the same family for many generations and is original.
The stamping on the barrel, and serial number on the underside is the only markings I can find..

Re: Remington 1858 help!!
Your 1858 appears to have entered this world in Dec. of 1863. Additional S/Ns should be located on the frame under the left grip and trigger guard tab. I don't see an inspectors cartouche stamped on the left grip so it may have been a civilian issue rather than military.
Re: Remington 1858 help!!
Sorry, but your gun is not original. The marking on the barrel should be on 3 lines and should read like this :
PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858
E.REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A.
NEW MODEL
Beside, the top of the grip should be rounded and come flush with the frame. The front sight is not correct either.

Re: Remington 1858 help!!
It looks like a mix master, but the serial numbers will tell us what it it. I'm not too concerned with the improper barrel marking since marking errors slip by inspectors. Check both the frame, and trigger guard for numbers. It looks like you have an old model frame with a new model barrel and the cylinder. The front sight is a replacement, possibly by someone for target shooting. The grips look too good to be original, but look for a serial number, or the last three digits of the serial penciled on the inside of the grip panels. Grips that were fitted to a particular pistol would have the number on the grip panels. The serial numbers will tell us what it is.
