We have all seen this done on nice Remington M1903's, postwar peep sights mounted on these guns to be used as deer rifles. This is a 3-42 marked barrel, serial #3,160,XXX, a pre model A3 and a M1903 'modified' as I believe it is called. It should have the M1905 rearsight collar base as shown below.
I expected to see that sight base possibly ground down to accept the upper wood handguard found on the A3 version and which is on this rifle. The underside has had wood removed to fit over this unusual barrel collar.
Has anyone encountered this kind of barrel collar?
