Model 12 - decocking
Model 12 - decocking
I just purchased a 1927 Model 12 and am getting used to how it works. Can you tell me how to decock it after it's racked? Is that possible or do you have to pull the trigger? Thanks for your help!

"Decock" is a specific term. The gun is cocked when the hammer is to the rear and ready to fire a cartridge. Decocked is the opposite of cocked. To decock the trigger must be pulled and the hammer released.
"Dry fire" is pulling the trigger when a cartridge is in the chamber. Damage can occur when dry firing.

You can open the action after the gun is cocked, without pulling the trigger.
In front of the trigger guard you can see the bottom of the Carrier, push upwards then pull back on the forearm, the action will open.
If ammo is in the chamber it will extract and eject at the same time. The next cartridge in the magazine is ready to be fed into the chamber.
These are neat guns and fun to shoot. Enjoy!

Thanks for your answer!
I'm trying to release the hammer (without dry firing) for storage. Something about storing a gun with a cocked hammer doesn't sit well with me.

Insert a fired case into the chamber, then dry fire. Orient the case so that the firing pin strikes a different spot than the first FP strike. If it's for long term storage a bit of grease on the case helps prevent corrosion and sticking in the chamber.

Dummy rounds are offered for many different gauges and calibers at most sporting goods stores. Dummy rounds have spring loaded "primers" which removes any primer concern.

Are you sure about that? Dummy round vs. snap cap, centerfire vs. rimfire.
Re: Model 12 - decocking
Dummy rounds and snap caps are the same to me. As far as I know snap caps aren't available for rim fire.

Dummy rounds and snap caps are different, and for different purposes.
This thread is about a rimfire and I didn't know where you were going with the spring loaded snap caps. All is good.
