We received 6 custom made model 770's left handers for auction.
Each one is stamped "Custom Built for Lanny Freeman by - John L Turner." These are all date coded in the mid-70's.
My question, does anyone know John L Turner? Was he a reputable gunsmith? Was he Remington only?
Google was no help for such a common name. Thanks in advance!

I don't recognize the name. The M770 rifle didn't hit the market until about 2007, those barrels might be takeoffs from earlier made Remingtons. Since they are 770's that helps narrow down the time frame of the rifles being built.

Re: Custom Build 700 for Left Hander
Actually these are just model 700, not the 770 (sorry, the things you get used to typing).
They are beautiful. Each tiger striped maple or oak stocks with diamond inlays and swelled grips.
Mr Turner did an amazing job, but like an engraver, it's always great to have the back story!
Hopefully the link to pictures works.

Re: Custom Build 770 for Left Hander
So, I’m sure that nobody will see this, but in the off chance that it is: I was given a .300 weatherby mag when I was a small child that still threw temper tantrums only recently have I shot it for the first time and I went to researching it and I found that it is a Remington 700 model with a left handed stock and action. It has stamped on the front built by John L Turner for Lanny R. Freeman, and it shoots like a dream. At 100 yards it put a hole through an AR500 steel plate. It has a tiger stripe pattern in the wood grain.

John L Turner was my grandfather and my mentor. He was a custom gunsmith in Austin Tx. for 37 years. He was a Marine veteran wounded in WWII. He started as a carpenter in a union, trimmed out cabinets, base boards, windows, doors, etc. Made a few tables and had them here in the State Capital. Started tinkering on guns in 1959 and fell in love with making stocks and turning barrels - and it became his passion. Made guns for people all over the world. Made my wife and I rifles for our wedding gifts in 1996. Those were his last. I search for guns made by him to this day and buy them. Found 1 in August at a gun show in College Station, Tx. 6mm-284, month before in Victoria, Tx. 257 Weatherby. You can tell his guns apart from everyone else. Very distinctive. From Claro and Bostone Walnut, Fiddleback, Birdseye, and Quilted Maple. Unlike any others, hand made from start to finish
