Need Help With A Remington Rolling Block

Post by Mid. »

Hello all, I really need some help with a Rolling block rifle I came into posesion of recently. Let me preface this by saying the previous owner (g.grandfather) is long since deceased and therefore my primary source of information is gone. From what I could figure out this rifle is in fact a Remington, it has a 3 line patent stamp on the tang.

This is the rifle, it is in great condition with a strong bore.

Marking on the middle barrel band.

This is the only other markings on the gun aside from the patent stamping and the "U" on the barrel band. There are no other visable markings anywhere on the rifle that I could find. (Yes, those are my legs.)

This is the front sight and portion of the rifle.

Now I really want to know what caliber this rifle is chambered in, it looks like a hoot to shoot. Any information would ba appreciated and if there is anything else I could look for on the gun to help you guys determine what it is please tell me to look. I thank you all for any help you could give.

Your rifle is the Argentine Model 1879 in caliber .43 Spanish. The faceted section of the barrel near the frame, called the knoxform, is unique to this model Remington rifle.

As stated in one of your replys, you have an 1879 Argentine contract musket in .43 Spanish. Buffalo Arms in Sandpoint Idaho has brass, bullets etc for this caliber as do several other suppliers. These are excellent shooters because the 1879 had excellent sights. The .43 Spanish is very similar to the .44/77 Sharps and is an excellent caliber. Correct bullet is 0.439"

I'd slug the bore for proper bullet diameter. My 11mm Spanish rifles/carbines have groove diameters from .439"-.448", probably the main reason the Spanish eventually went to the Reformado cartridge. Possibly Remington held the Argentine contract to tighter tolerances; my Argentine slugs at .439" but why guess.
