14 1/2 38wcf rifle

Post by rim-fire »

I just picked up a 14 1/2 38-40 in v.g. to ext. condition and was wondering how many 14 1/2's were made, I have seen articles in the past that say 2000 or less and others with over 4000 made. Also anyone have any good cast bullet loads for theirs.
Thanks

Nobody really knows because there are no actual production records and the serials of the 14 & 14-1/2 were intermixed. There are probably more 44's because of an order for 4,000 awarded to Remington by the British Government during WWI but both calibers of the 14-1/2 are not that common but by far the 44-40 is in greater demand. I doubt you could classify the 14-1/2 as "rare" unless you find a carbine (18-1/2" Barrel).

While the 14-1/2 shares many parts with the Model 14 there are several that are unique and almost impossible to find so take care of your rifle and enjoy it. You will find it a pleasure to shoot BUT OACL is extremely critical on this model and set your dies using vintage rounds, just a few thousands too long will adversely affect loading and feed resulting in some nasty jamming.

Tom Hemphill might be able to give you a better idea of overall production but again its "educated guesswork".

Good luck!
