Model 31 odd forend

I have a Model 31 16 ga. but the forend has 5 grooves at the front, then no grooves and then two grooves at the rear. Is this a replacement forend or is this indicative of some model variation? I've looked at forends of many Model 31's and they are all grooved from end to end. Thanks.
