I Found This RB at a gunshow and?

Post by Yellowhouse »

Don't have a clue. It had a bout a 32 in round barrel, military style with bands. No sling through triggerguard. The tang was marked with the usual Remington, etc and patent dates. The receiver had no markings ANYWHERE on side, tang, triggerguard, barrel, bands.

Now get this. The action and barrel had a perfect matching brown patina with no pitting. This guy at the gunshow said it was chambered in 45-70 and it had a mint bore (no signs of being lined). The bands were rough and different colored from the barrel so I suspect they were add ons. Too the stocks had greatly been sanded down and the buttplate was severely pitted and rusted.

Was I looking at a RB military style made for the American market or something cobbled together? His starting price was $1100 anyway so that pretty much turned me off. Anyway I was spooked by the whole deal especially being chambered in 45-70 and no markings.

This is insufficient info to determine the exact model and whether it is original or a cobbled together rifle. If the barrel and frame metal do not match the condition of the rest of the gun, then it is always suspect--especially with all of the refinishing. There was a .45-70 New York State Model military style rifle (identical in design to the New York State Model 1871 rifle) sold for civilian use, but these are very scarce, and unlikely to be found in well used condition.
