12.17 x 44 mm rimfire conversion to centerfire?

Post by bret7237 »

I have a very nice 12.17 x 44 mm rimfire danish rolling block, looks like its been shot 20 times and put in a safe for 100 yrs.

What's involved in in converting the block to centerfire or must a proper centerfire block, trigger assembly, and hammer be fitted ?

Does anyone other than Lone Star do this work or is it as simple as putting centerfire parts into the 12.17 x 44 reciever and checking for headspace and sear engagement?

Thanks in advance for any info, Ken

Hi:

I assume you mean a Swedish M67. The Danish rifles were 11.7x51 and have all been converted to CF/RF interchangable blocks. If you get lucky, and I have, you might find a CF No. 1 block that will drop right in. Afterall, the Danes and Swedes were essentially making exact clones of Remington actions. I suspect that one of your other blocks may well work. Maybe headspacing will not be such a problem. But Lone Star did a great job on one of my M67 rifles, so if you choose to go that route, you will not be disappointed. Let us know the results.

Are you sure it's a rimfire? The 12.17 X 44R was a centerfire cartridge very similar to a .50/70 Govt. The 12.17 X 44R brass & bullets are available and it's a fine shooting cartridge.

I recently had my .38 Long rimfire RRB restored and converted to .357 Mag by Delta Gunshop in Colville, WA. Look them up on the web at http://www.deltagunshop.com/. Jim Dubell filled the rimfire firing pin hole in my breech block and machined a new one for a centerfire pin. At the same time he installed a 4160 steel .357 Mag liner inside the old barrel, which is a beautifully tapered full octagon barrel on the outside, but looked like a sewer pipe on the inside. I now have an original looking No. 1 RRB Sporter that shoots modern .357 Mag cartridges.

Actually, the original Swedish cartridge was a rim fire. The center fire breech block is a civilian modification. The Swedish military never used a 12mm center fire ctg. I have several Swedish 12mm's and a few of them are still rim fire. I am able to switch around some of the center fire blocks for the rim fire ones for shooting. However, they are not all interchangeable. I suspect there was a certain amount of hand fitting during mfg. or there was slight differences between Carl Gustav, Husqvarna and the smaller operations. Unless you have other Swede 12mm rolling blocks, Lone Star would probably be the way to go.
