Lever-rolling block

A friend of mine has a remington #1 Rolling block action, but with a lever. I think there is a serial number (very low), and that is all for markings. He thinks it is a prototype, as no one he knows has ever seen one. The lever is very well made, and the loading hammer has been removed, both very well done as if from factory. It appears to have never been barreled or fitted with a stock. The movement of the action is very clean and precise. The entire piece seems to have been layed in a drawer and forgotten about. I will see about producing some pictures if anyone is interested. Any information would be helpful! Thank you!

There have been a number of sidelever conversions on the old Rolling Block large framed rifles over the years. I don't know of any factory conversions to sidelever, but maybe one of the folks who have more contact with the factory, or early Rolling Block designs might know.

I don't have any info but I'd sure like to see some pictures.

I do remember seeing a picture somewhere of a modified roller with either a lever or a side-lever...I'll have to look throught my stuff. I think it was an auctioned Schuetzen rifle sometime in the past few years, which certainly would have been a custom affair.

Most I've seen were side levers, but I have seen one done recently that used an underlever.

Dang it!! Just when I thought I was over wanting anymore custom rolling blocks you just had to show me a Gemmer with an underlever, didn't ya! And I would love to see pics of the one at top of thread.

Sorry this has taken so long! There seems so small differences, such as the hole locations, the extension of the mounting tang on the action, and of course the locking lever. The trigger is removed, or never placed. Sorry for the poor picture quality,the lighting is terrible in the shop.

There was a gunsmith in Denver by the name of Carlos Gove that modified several Rolling blocks in the late 1890"s with a under lever, I have a new one that was made by Lone Star Rifles, a very nice job.

This is the conversion I did. The barrel and stock were from Numrich Arms in .45-70. The action cost about $8 from Hunter's Lodge in Alexandria, Virginia in 1967.

Your action looks exactly like one pictured and written up by Frank de Haas in his third book on single shot rifles: "A Potpourri of Single Shot Rifles and Actions" on page 73. He refers to it as a "Nagant Rolling Block Action".
