Help with a Remington 45 70 RB

I have a 45 70 with no marking other than a r stamped on the side and a patent date on 1878 any idea on this gun?

Is this a military rifle/carbine or a sporting rifle? What is the barrel length? What other patent dates are marked on the tang? How is the Remington name marked on the tang (i.e. which Remington company)? In other words, a little more info is needed to ID the gun.
