Hello Jeff,

Got your photo's by email.
Looks like the rolling block carbine is actually a rifle with a cut down forearm.
You stated that the barrel length is 34-1/4 inches, carbines usually have a barrel length from 20 to 24 inches. Rifle barrels are generally from 32 to 37 inches in length. The rifle would of had a forearm with 3 barrel bands. On the top of the rolling block receiver it looks like the stampings that are generally found on rifles and carbines that were sent to Egypt. This type of rolling block would of been chambered in 43 Egyptian. The rear sight on the rifle is one generally found on the Model 1871 New York State rolling block rifles, so the rear sight may be a repalcement. The Egyptian rifle would of had a long bayonet lug location on the right side of the barrel near the front sight. Do you know if this gun has a bayonet lug on it?
Remington generally did not stamp the caliber of the cartridge on the barrel of their military rifles that they sold, so the 50-45 markings may of been added at a later date. The barrel maybe a replacement from another gun. You would have to slug the barrel and do a chamber cast to see what caliber the gun is. The receiver is a early style that Remington made with the slide extractor and the spring loaded firing pin, into the early 1870's.
Hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Hello Jeff,

If the barrel doesn't have a baynet lug on it and looks like one was never ground off, he could have a barrel off of a New York State rolling block rifle chambered in 50-70. Since he got those rounds with the gun and they did chamber in the gun.
