Trying to identify a muzzle loading rifle.

Post by John »

Several years ago, I purchased a muzzle loading rifle at an estate auction.

Overall length is 47"

Barrel is 30 ½", approximately 40 caliber, 3/8" across 8 flats with a brass
blade front sight and a rear sight dovetail. Underside of barrel is clearly
marked "REMINGTON"

Rear sight is an iron folding peep sight set in the stock.

Percussion lock is 4" long and clearly marked "REMINGTON'.

Beautifully inletted brass cap box is 4 ½" long.

Crescent brass butt plate is a little more than 4" long, with a 4 ¼" brass
base plate.

Fancy brass trigger guard is 8 ½ " long.

Nose cap appears to be silver.

Metal finish is worn off sharp edges.

Wood is very good except for old repairs at barrel inlet.

Everything appears original except ram rod and barrel tennon.

I would appreciate information about this firearm.

Your gun was made by some gunsmith using Remington parts including the barrel and lock and probably much of the hardware. Jay Huber RSA
