Rem. marked barrel on Springfield Long Range Rifle, ca. 1879

Post by Dick Hosmer »

Have just acquired a Springfield TD with a very odd barrel. It APPEARS to be of SA manufacture, but am not completely certain. It has 6 (narrow) lands and grooves, and a rapid twist, but a standard 2.1" chamber, throated for a paper-patched bullet. It is marked "Remington Arms Co., Ilion, New York".

It is known that SA was working with Winchester during the 1879-1881 long range testing sessions; I had not known that they might have also been working with Remington? The serial number is 116189, VERY close to another known specimen (no barrel marking(s) recorded, however).

I would GREATLY appreciate anyone having ANY info, or thoughts, on this subject (Ed Hull, are you there?) getting in contact with me. Thank you very much. I do have a "real" TD LRR (162036) for comparison.

Hi Dick-
For the info of other RSA members I'm posting this reply. You had emailed me that the marking on the barrel is "Remington Arms Co. Ilion,N.Y." The RAC came into existence in 1888, well after the Long Range Rifle period at the Springfield Armory, so it is truly an enigma as to why this Remington marked barrel shows up on a trapdoor rifle.

Hi Ed,

Sometimes, one man's negative is another man's positive. With all due respect to my surroundings (you know that I'm in unfamiliar territory here) - I really did NOT want the barrel to have been MADE by Remington - I'd much prefer that the stamp (perhaps) indicate ownership at one time. SO - if RAC did not make it, then someone else did, and right now, my money would have to be on SA. Thank you very much.

Dick- You're right, I should not have assumed that the marking necessarily indicated manufacture by RAC.
