I bought a Model 11 at an auction. I am confused as to the date of manufacture. It does not have the standard BLACKPOWDER date codes on the left side of the receiver or barrel. The serial number is 14800X. I checked the date book, which starts on 09/30/1919 with 199611. On the barrel are several markings:
REMINGTON ARMS CO., INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A.
BROWNING'S U.S.PATS. 689.283-710.094-730.870-812.326 (Top)
12 GA. FOR 2 3/4 OR SHORTER SHELLS.
FULL (Left side)
REP (Inside an oval on the right side)
The barrel has no rib and has a bead near the muzzle. The only markings on the receiver are on the bottom in front of where you load the shells, which is the serial number, 14800X. There is also a very faint "Remington UMC" inside a circle behind the trigger guard. There is something written under the circle, but I can't make it out.
Anyways, I figure this was made after 1911, since it has the faint UMC marking. However, the serial number seems to indicate it was produced pre-1919, but the barrel says Remington Arms Co., Inc., indicating it was produced after 1920. I searched the log book, and could not find any serial number even close to mine. Is it possible it was rebarreled? I can take pics if necessary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you have it figured out, a gun made during the teens with a later barrel. Check the barrel for a serial number, usually stamped around the base of the ring that slides over the magazine tube. Also, check the barrel for a date code on the sides just ahead of the receiver.

There are no date codes or serial numbers on the barrel as far as I can tell. Are they under the wood forend? I haven't taken that off, and due to the age of the gun, dont feel comfortable taking it off. I'm not sure how to do it on this gun, and don't want to break anything.

The barrel serial number is normally under the forearm. Make sure the gun is unloaded. Open the breech. Unscrew the cap on the end of the forearm and slide the wood forearm off the magazine tube. Slide the barrel foreward. I've usually found the serial number stamped around the base of the ring that goes around the magazine tube.
