Supposed Civil war rifle

Post by spector006 »

Can anyone give me any info on what is suppoese to be my G G Grandfathers Civil war rifle.

It is marked as follows

Right hand just behind the percussion hammer "Remington's Illion N.Y. 1857 U.S."
Strap to stock on top to the stock " 1857 D A 39"
Left side of combustion chamber "J.T.
On the left side of the stock stamped in the wood are two ovals one has the capitol letters " J M" in script and the other has "E B" whith the numeral "3" underneath.
I have spent many hours trying to find this firearm on the internet and have found no references to it.
Can anyone help?

Can you post a photo of your rifle, with particular attention to the right side area of the hammer and frame. My first thought is that it is a Maynard Tape Conversion and if so, I can furnish a fair amount of information for you. If you wish to email the photo's direct to me, my contact info is mammothinc@aol.com

Is it a musket in 69 caliber and does the lock plate have a little door that covers a recessed area that is round.?
