A friend of mine has inherited an old rifle from his grandfather.

Please provide a bit more information: caliber, barrel length, how many bands hold the forestock, where the serial number is marked, what proof marks are on the metal. The patent marking most probably ends in "1866" rather than 1886.

The forestock holds 3 bands.
The serial no. is placed on the left side of the chamber.

The barrel length (from end to bach of chamber is 35 inches.


The caliber is a bit hard to see. but the front messuares .393 inches.

The last patent date is probably 1866. The Danish Rolling Block had a serial # on the rear, left side of the barrel. On the Danish-made guns it was on a few other places as well. However, the caliber of the Danish Rolling Block was 11.7mm (.460"). The groove diameter on my Danish Rolling Blocks, both Remington made and Danish made, varies from .460" to .463". Is your .393" correct?
