I just picked up my first shotgun - a Remington Model 11. I've been a gun collector for many years, but this is my first foray into shotguns.
The serial number is 702088 and is marked RMM, giving it a Nov. 1943 production date. I'm just curious as to what history may be behind this piece, where it may have gone, and how it might have been used. Any information that you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated
Well, your M11 was in the second batch of serial numbers for military shotguns, 700,000 to 711,000. These guns were dedicated military shotguns and, since yours has a Cutts on it, it was probaply used to train gunners to shoot airplanes. The Army Aircorps and the Navy had many of these guns made up with factory Cutts to be used for skeet shooting and that is probably what the gun was used for.
Earlier guns were taken from stock and had bright blued finishes and some even were engraved. The 3 shot Sportsman model was also included in this group, too. In the days just after Pearl Harbor, guns were even taken off of sporting goods store's shelves by the National Gaurd to be used for repealing parachute commandos in California and even Chicago. These guns were then rearsonaled and marked with military symbols later. I've seen a Grade E M11 and a Grade D M31 with the "flaming Bomb" on the barrel and stock. I'd guess that those guns were donated by patriotic citizens during this time of great fear.
