I recently acquired this beautiful engraved and gold plated Remington over-under, but I discovered that the barrels and frame don't have the same number. A guy told me that there was nothing
wrong with this as it often occured on this model. What do you think ?
Many thanks for your help.
Please, help me with this Remington over-under
Re: Please, help me with this Remington over-under
Hello Pat,
A Remington revolver or pistol having different serial numbers is not that uncommon mainly because Remington policy was to never throw anything useable away. During my research on C.A. marked New Model Army Type 3 conversion revolvers I compiled a list of 63 New Model Army revolvers where the frame and barrel had different serial numbers. Revolvers which failed inspection were disassembled and the defective part was disposed of. The good parts from a failed revolver were put back in the manufacturing process to be used on later guns. None of the previously used parts were over-stamped with a new serial number.
Since your pistol is engraved it most likely went to the engraver (be it a factory or aftermarket engraver) with mixed serial numbers. Neither Remington nor the Government cared about mixed serial numbers. In my opinion the only people who care about mixed serial numbers are the collectors.
Enjoy your Double Deringer,
Bill

Thank you, Bill. Your answer reassures me. I am a collector and I think I have heard too much about the importance of matching numbers...
