Remington double barrel info request

Post by Dufekas »

Dear members,

Greetings from Athens, Greece!

I have an old double barrel Remington hunting rifle, given to me by my grandad (RIP) before he passed some 20 years ago.

He had brough the gun from Canada back in the 50s, where he had worked in the railway construction.

Anyway, the gun looks quite old and I am keen to know its value (as its sentimental one is unaccountable) so as to consider insurance.

The SR is 100078, could anyone provide some guidance?

The Remington Hammerless Double Barrel Shot Gun (aka Model 1894) was introduced in the Remington Arms Co. October 1894 catalog, offered in 10- and 12-gauge and with or without automatic ejectors.

The Model 1894 was offered in five grades, A- to EE-Grade. The A-/AE-grades were plain without any engraving, two-stripe Damascus barrels and nice European Walnut stocks. As the grade went up, they got more/better engraving, finer Damascus barrels and higher quality stocks with fancier checkering. Unfortunately, Remington didn't begin picturing the higher grades in the catalogs until 1902.

Model 1894 serial numbers began at 100000, so your gun with serial number 100078 must be from the first year's production. No production records for Remington Hammerless Double Barrel Shot Guns have been found in the surviving records. The late Charles Semmer, for his book Remington Double Shotguns, produced a serial number chronology from surviving shipping records which shows 100000 to 100660 for 1894.

Post some good pictures of your gun, including the barrel flats and watertable, and perhaps we can tell you more.

Dear Researcher,

First off many thanks for your attention and comrehensive info!

Attaching pics of the gun, which indeed has some fine engravings on the length of the barrels albeit almost wiped out by obvious throught wear'n'tear.

With kind regards and appreciation,
Dufekas

You indeed have an A Grade Model 1894. The A Grade did not have any engraving - the Remington Arms Co. on the sides of the receiver was roll stamped. What you referred as engraving on the barrels is actually the Damascus pattern. This pattern can be restored through a chemical process. However looking at the general condition I'd simply enjoy it after being evaluated by a gunsmith to ensure it is safe to shoot.

Dear dieNusse1,

Many thanks for your confirmation! I was indeed referring to the Damascus patterns by "engravings".

Goes without saying it is due for gunsmith soon.

As mentioned the gun is of invaluable worth, I intend to use it for hunting once repaired and in perfect working order.

Kind regards,

I was a bit in error as there is some engraving. The serial number on the trigger guard should be engraved rather than stamped.

No worries, there is the SN engraving on the trigger guard.

Will wait for input as to any value other than it's sentimental so as to arrange insurance.

Thanking you once again!

Thanks for the pictures. The gun is the entry-level A-Grade. Is it a 12-gauge or 10-gauge? What is the length of the barrels?

What you are calling "engraving" is the Damascus barrels. The alternating ribbands of iron and steel that went in to making the barrel tubes take the finishing differently and produce the patterns you see. Here is a link to a explanation of how Damascus barrels were made --

From your pictures it appears the gun is in pretty rough shape and the stock is a replacement which appears to have cracked and has a screw securing it. In that condition it is only worth a couple hundred dollars in the marketplace and not really worth insuring.

Hi there,

According to my father the stock had been repaired, yet not replaced.

At any rate this is a 12gauge, 76cm /29.9inch gun.

Cheers once again
