Writing this book on the Remington 550 series rifles is taking a toll on my gun money. I picked up rifle number 10 today that I won at auction. It's always kind of a crap shoot when you buy a rifle from an online auction because you really never know the condition of the rifle. I got lucky this time, this one is a beauty! The Remington 550 Date Code "O K" was born in July 1941 and was the last month of production where a deflector was not offered. Remington did not add a deflector to the design until November 1941, but even then, there was a mix of both no-deflector and deflector-equipped rifles. By December 1941, only rifles with deflectors could be purchased.
This rifle came with a two-extractor type bolt, an oval loading port in the magazine, case colored trigger, and an early type front sight. I got lucky because the sear spring case has not been mucked with. Three of the ten rifles I have purchased will require reworking the sear spring case because the prior owner cross-threaded it, by reinstalling it incorrectly.
The only other issue, not really an issue, is that the side was drilled and tapped for a side mount; it looks like it was drilled and tapped for a Weaver N1 3/4" Side Mount. I'll have to see if I have one that I can mount on the rifle. I have plenty of Weaver Scopes.
