722 Safety?

Post by Tink1100 »

Buddy lent me a 722 in 6mm to use for this deer season. Doing a bit of research, it appears this model had a problem with the safety, at least early years. Checking the barrel code, it looks to have been made in 1971. Were these safety issues resolved by then? And checking the gun, I can't seem to get the safety to hold in the forward (safe off, I guess) position. But I did not have a cartridge in the chamber when trying. Does the safe not go on unless the chamber is loaded? He has so many guns that he probably knows little about this one, I think he inherited from his dad a couple of years ago.

Nephew wants to use my only rifle this year, so I decided to borrow one rather than lug my 1100 in 16 gauge again.

Thanks!

Tink!

We seem to have a problem here since the 722 was discontinued in 1962 and wasn't made in 6mm, the 721 was discontinued about the same time, and it wasn't chambered in 6mm. I have a 1956 Model 722 in .222 and a 1950 721 in .300 H&H, neither have had any safety problem. I shot a lot of Prairie Dogs with the 722 back then without any problem but have only fired the .300 maybe a dozen times.

They are both in my vault and I'm too old and too lazy to see if the safety works on an empty chamber!
