Remington Hepburn No 3 in .40-90

Post by rudybolla »

This is a very good example of the Remington Hepburn No. 3 sporting rifle in .40-90. It possibly left the factory as a .40-70, as the caliber is overstamped .40 3 1/4. It was shipped to BROWNING BROS OGDEN UT, as indicated on top barrel flat. The single line Remington address indicates an 1880-88 manufacture date. It has a heavy 30" octagonal barrel with probably 50-60% faded finish and light mottling. Rear semi-buckhorn and silver blade front sights. Bore shows worn, but very shootable rifling. I believe these are express rifles that shoot pistol weight bullets, but am not sure. The Walnut stocks are in overall very good condition, with forend checkering showing more wear. The checkering on the pistol grip is generally sharp, with some bruising on left side. Receiver is silvered, with faint traces of case colors. The left side of the frame is marked “HEPBURNS PAT. / OCT 7TH 1879” along the lower edge. The falling block has a generous amount of factory blue. Action is crisp. $2800 + Shipping. More photos available.
