Hi, I received this Remington DB shotgun from an estate recently. The serial number is 225546 and has 4 G stamped underneath the barrels along with the letter "P".
Also where the underneath piece stamped on the connector piece is the number 200 along with the number 712 on one barrel. The shotgun appears to be in excellent condition, barrels, stock, triggers, hammers, etc. It was stored in a gun cabinet for many years.
Is it possible to determine the manufacture date and possibly who the original owner was? What does the 200 and 712 refer too?
Thanks in advance, G D

Re: Remington Double Barrell Shotgun
Serial number 225546 would be a Model 1889 from 1902 according to the serial number chronology the late Charles Semmer constructed from surviving shipping records, for his seminal book Remington Double Shotguns. No production records have been found. From a 1901 Remington Arms Co. catalog --
The Model 1889 was made in seven grades. No. 1, 2 & 3 were plain with no engraving, but differed by barrel material, No. 1 decarbonized steel, No. 2 Twist and No. 3 Damascus. The higher grades No. 4 to 7 had increasingly more engraving, finer Damascus barrels, finer stock wood and fancier checkering. The grade number was stamped on the barrel flat to the left of the serial number --

Thank you! Does the # 200 and 712 refer to anything?
