Spare cylinder for original New Model Army available?
Spare cylinder for original New Model Army available?
Are spare cylinders for the New Model Army somewhere available?
A reproduction or minor fitting is no problem for me.

I'd try Dixie Gun Works in Union City, TN

I don't know if it would work but since they're out-of-stock it really doesn't matter.
I'd call Dixie and bend their ear and ask what their experience has been. But if they can't help I'd defer to the forum NMA experts to guide you as to what will and won't work for your gun.

I got one at an auction, at a fair price, fitted the frame right way.

Hi Nils,
I don't know if the repos will fit. To find out write the maker, but I believe that I've read that none of them will fit and function. Your best bet is a parts dealer, probably at a gun show. Or you could buy another gun for a parts gun. Maybe try Gun Broker or Guns International for a cylinder. You can also post a "wanted" ad in the RSA Journal.
Good luck,
Daniel

Certain years of Uberti repro revolver cylinders will interchange & function well.
Might consider contacting forum member 45D on the Muzzleloader forum, he's very talented with single action revolvers.

Hi Nils,
Where are you located? The major gun shows in Vegas (Jan), Balto (March) Tulsa (this weekend and Oct) and some regional gun show such as Reno, OH collectors' shows, and similar shows. usually have parts dealers that could have a cylinder. Post a want ad in the RSA Journal. Gun Parts Corp is another place to try. Please let us know if you find one, and where you found it.
Good luck with your search.

Hi sig,
That is very interesting. It makes I wonder if any of the other Pietta repos have parts that are interchangeable with original?

I also have hammer and few springs that with minor fitting will fit and function.
Here are more comparison and fitting pics for your analysis.

Re: Spare cylinder for original New Model Army available?
Sorry for being a year late, but I just bought an original Remington New Model Army and had the same question about spare cylinders.
I have an original Remington cylinder that I need to have the nipples removed and replaced. My fears lead me to post this to see if the Uberti [or modified Pietta] cylinders have the cylinder chamber aligned with the forcing cone enough for regular use.
I was also curious about the comments that some years of Uberti might work, but not others.
I have a Pietta 1858, an Uberti 1858 and now the Remington 1858.
My Pietta cylinder wouldn't fit in the frame as it was too long, like in the pics in this thread. My Remington cylinder would fit in the Pietta frame though, but with more endshake than I want.
My Uberti cylinder fit in the Remington frame 'just fine' and cycled/locked up properly.
However I noticed some differences between the cylinders. By my measurements, the Pietta had an outside diameter of 1.590", vs the Uberti's 1.620" and the Original Remington at 1.630". This is all give/take .003".
I put a light in the muzzle of the Remington barrel to see if the cylinder sat 'too low' with the Uberti cylinder installed, but it seemed to create the same solid 'ring' of metal shadow inside the forcing cone area, leading me to think that it was aligned well enough for ball ammo.
I also measured the outer thickness of the cylinder wall and found the Uberti cylinder to be around .005" thinner than the Remington cylinder.
IF my measurements are accurate this would support the idea that the Uberti chambers are spaced properly for the Remington action, even if the diameter is .010" thinner.
However, before I take any risks I have ordered some range rods to measure alignment, and I also thought I'd ask here to see if the collective has any concrete experience with this and recommendations.
Thank you in advance for any insights you have and can share.
