Matt,
I have two commercially loaded .58 Berdan ctgs, one headstamped "WRA Co" and the other un stamped but probably UMC. Both have a slightly different bullet profile. So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that it is possible that different manufactures used slightly different profiles in their bullet designs. I use a Rapine #585510 bullet in my .58 Berdan Rolling Block rifle. It is a hollow based bullet that comes out at about 495 grains with wheelweights.
This does not answer your question but gives a good alternative to a
"factory" bullet.

Matt,
My most recent Rapine catalog has a web site of: http://www.bulletmoulds.com. Telephone # of 215-679-5413. I cast my bullets with wheelweights (altho I've recently acquired some 1:20 tin/lead mix), hand lube them and load with 60 gr of RS Pyrodex. 60 gr gives about 1152 fps. I've loaded up to 75 gr RS Pyro for about 1224 fps but bullets were scattered all over the paper. 60 gr gives right at 3" at 75 yds with the issue sights and my aging eyes. As 6o gr RS Pyro will not fill the case I add cornmeal as a filler then add a .58 cal Ox-Yoke Wonder wad between cornmeal and bullet. I use 4-D reloading dies which I also got from Rapine.
The ctg you describe sounds like a UMC mfg. They used the raised base around the primer (altho others may have too). I BELIEVE that the raised portion gave added strength to the primer pocket. The .58 Berdan came out during the "age of discovery" in center fire cartridge manufacturing.
The biggest hurdle to overcome with this ctg is the case. I ended up using Bertram .577-500 cases trimmed to length. They are not cheap but should last forever.
