Hello from Germany. I am owner of some Remingtons, one is mysterius -
"PATENTED SEPT 14 1858
E: REMINGTON & SONS ILTON NEWYORK U.SA
NEW MODEL"
In the frame is left over Barrel a big 525 stamped, Inspectormarks are on left frame U at 525 and L big screw over trigger, W on Barrel, U on Triggergurad and a number 135186 under barrel and in frame (grip).
It is good conditiion, shows like using in civilwar.
Could anybody help me - I can send Pics . The Stamp at barrel is mystic:

Your gun soundslike one issued at the end if the Civil War. I know of no significance for the 525 and it may be a stamp added by someone using the gun after the war. I think you are misreading the name ILIon which is the towm where Remington had their factory. The left grip should have a cartouche stamped on it. The L,U &W are government inspector marks I think.
