I have a heavy target rifle from about circa 1860. The gun is .43 caliber with a gain twist, false muzzle, and set triggers. It has a lollipop rear sight with windage and elevation and a hooded "boars hair" front sght. It was made by "Hatch" in Burlington Vermont (stamped on one flat) The underside of the Bbl is marked "Remington #1". Did Remington just sell barrels to gun makers in the 1800's?

Thanks, I didn't know that and when I found the Remington stamp on the botton flat it was a surprise. Did Remington sell them with the false muzle or did the local gunsmith have to figure that out? Pretty tough unless he rifled it after fitting the false muzzle. Learn something new every day.
