Lane, I'd contact Wayne Gagner at SRS. He is an experienced researcher, and should be able to help you, or at least provide some pointers.
It has also been stated that - so far as West Point is concerned - the cadet's name was engraved on the buttplate. Given the turnover, I find this most implausible, and my 1867 Allin Cadet (acquired after book was written) bears no such mark, or any sign of it having been removed. My 1867 RB Cadet has the letter/numbers on the tang.
