Remington .44 Centerfire Cartridge

Post by Roy Marcot »

As far as I know there are numerous cartridges which are considered "Remington .44 Centerfire"...

In the field of No.1 "Rolling Block" guns, one of the most frequently observed chamberings is the 44S which was mentioned in E. Remington & Son's catalogs as the "Remington Special" centerfire cartridge. This is a paper-patched, bottle-necked cartridge with a .44 caliber bullet, backed with 77 grains of black powder. 2 1/4" case.

Other Remington .44 centerfire rifle cartridges include:

the .44-90 (essentially the same cartridge as the 44S except loaded with 90 grains of powder. Not to be confused with the 2 5/8" bottlenecked case cartridge.

the .44-100 Remington Creedmoor straight cartridge. Popular in long range shooting of the Remington No.3 Hepburn Rifle.

The .44 Remington centerfire was the designation of a proprietary revolver cartridge marketed by E. Remington & Sons for their Model 1875 Frontier Revolver. It was not a .44-40 WCF cartridge. The M1875 revolver was later chambered for the .44-40 WCF and for the .45 Colt.
