That's what I'd try first ! Before drilling and retapping to a larger size .

"Sap" pretty much has it right this time!

Remington used a lot of thread sizes that are not readily available today but in some cases you can get something close enough to do the job. I re-cut threads on Model 14 action bars all the time using taps I ordered from the UK and they work nicely.

I wish I could tell you the thread size used in the Model 12 (they are smaller than those in the Model 14), that would at least give you some direction. Failing that and as a last resort I have had "some" luck with using newly manufactured screws to re-thread. The "new" screws are made from metal that is considerably more hard/durable than what was used 100 years ago on the Model 12 or the Model 14 action bars.

Securing a tap in the proper size of course is the way to go but I would think that someone on this "forum" may know the thread size and pass the info on to you.

New screws are availabale from Apertures & More as well as Numrich.
