I have a #1 sporting rifle in 44-77. It is marked 44s. I reload and shoot this rifle. I don't believe Remington chambered the #1 1/2 in 44-77, maybe its a #1. Post some pics if possible. Roy Marcots book "Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines & Shotguns, Sporting and Target Rifles" is a must have for anyone interested in these rifles.

Re: Rolling Block Caliber? 44S
Remington marked barrels with 44S for the 44-2 1/4 and 44 2 7/16 case (44-77 & 44-90 Special). Unless someone rebarrelled the rifle it is a #1. The # 1 1/2 was only built in .22, .32, & .38 rimfire & .32 & .38 centerfire cartridges. The 1 1/2 action was thinner & lighter weight than the #1 & military actions. (See Roy Marcot's book).
the 44-77 was a Remington Cartridge. Sharps also sold it under their name when it became obvious that it was popular.Sharps only loaded it with 75 grains of Fg (factory load). Remington used 77 grains for hunting & 90 grains for a target load.

Re: Rolling Block Caliber? 44S
My 44-77 is marked 44S and I agree that it is likely a #1

Re: Rolling Block Caliber? 44S
CH Tool & Die makes dies & necksizer bushings for this caliber. I use them for my 44-77 & the weird "44-90 Sort of" Argentine I picked up. I had better luck with jamison brass over the refprmed 348WCF but jamison is no longer doing buisness.jeffchance wrote:Thanks for the information. We were able to find ammo for it here:
