Reading up on the NMA, I found that my revolver has the dovetailed german silver cone sight of the 1861 model and the three line New Model patent print and safety slots of the NMA. Serial is 37474
Is this one of the transitional models or did they just use up the old sights untill they were all gone? I have not removed the sight to check for a threaded hole underneath, so I guess that it is possible that it could be a retrofit.
Are these sights common on NMA?

Dovetailed sights on NMA?

In all likelyhood it's a transition model. Remington never threw away anything, they used what they had until they ran out. The sight may be a retrofit, but I doubt it. Does the hammer have a high or low spur? I see a good many transition NMA's models with the cone front sight, but I don't see a lot of transition New Model Navy models. The Navy is a little bit more rare and worth keeping an eye out for. The most complete information on percussion Remingtons is Don Ware's book "Remington Army & Navy Revolvers 1861-1888". Don's book is pretty much recognized as the bible on these guns. Thanks for posting your quetion on the forum. If you're interested we'd like to have you as a RSA member. Re: Dovetailed sights on NMA?
Thanks George, I take it that it's not a rare piece then. Normally one associates the term transition model with a good collectors value, but since I bought it to shoot it I'd rather have a common version.
The hammer is the low spur version and the loading lever is large web without the recess for the cylinder pin.

It's now been test fired and I'm amazed that someone actually managed to get themself killed by one of these guns! I fired at a tree stump from 10' and managed to make a small dent in the wood about 1/4" deep.
But the muzzle blast and smoke makes up for the lack of penetration
Edit:
How come that your reply doesn't register on the forum?
I've been checking in and, seeing a zero in the replies column, haven't opened the thread. Now it says one reply.
Strange...

I don't know why the reply didn't register, but I'll check with our internet guru.
I'm glad you posted a picture. It looks like a transition to me. Being a transition doesn't add much value, but I do think it's a bit more desireable.
If you like smoke and fire, these old guns are a hoot to shoot. Sounds like you've done your research and you're pretty much up to speed. The research is about as much fun as shooting.
We just completed our annual RSA membership meeting that was held in conjunction with the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show and it was fun. Please consider becoming a member of the RSA, we'd sure like to have you. Congratulations on getting your hands on a really neat old pistol.

They sure are and I sure do!gmaque wrote:If you like smoke and fire, these old guns are a hoot to shoot.

I'll consider a membership, but I've got 3,400 miles to the nearest point of the US so I'd recon I won't be attending many meetings...

GREAT, we'd sure like to have you as a RSA member. It's well worth the price for the quarterly Journal alone. Back issues of the Journal are available on this web site and some of them contain a welth of info on Remington percussion revolvers.
