Tony,

I think you're worried needlessly about the "kick" factor. If you're shooting at some game in the field, you probably wouldn't notice it. However, I have heard about the 3 1/2" Super Magnum 12 gauges being pretty brutal to shoot......although I've never personally shot one.

I looked back through some of the Remington catalogs that I've accumulated since 1968 and it appears that by 1985 the "standard" frame 20 ga. was gone. There were lightweights and standard weights in 2 3/4" and 3" going back to around 1970 or earlier......but, apparently they started trimming the number of variations around the early 80s. Also, the choke tubes hadn't quite caught on yet and most shotguns were still fixed chokes in those days.

Actually, I've never felt the need to use 3" magnums (12 or 20 ga.). I also really haven't used that many 2 3/4" magnums in all of my hunting years. Standard loads always seemed to do just fine. When people use "magnum" loads, they have a tendency to take longer shots than they should and either miss or wound what they're shooting at.

Your gun is the same as the ones made today. And if it is a Wingmaster it is a very nice piece. I have never found the recoil from any 20 - 3" or otherwise - to be very bad. I mean how bad can 1-1/4 ounce loads kick? I also think the LW20 870s and the LW/LT20 1100s handle great.
What could have happened... did.
