Hi everyone I am new to remington rolling blocks. I just purchased an original reciever with new barrel. Id like some information on what I have so I can decide what I would like to do with it. As far as collector value goes I don't believe it has any, as most of the rifle is not intact.
here is what I can tell you about it:
Its Color case hardened which has faded over the years but still looks rather good, the trigger gaurd is also color case hardened. It is a saddle ring reciever. Most of the tang writing is obsured by age but the last patent date is march 18th 1874 It has some light pitting on the sides of the tangs but none that wouldn't be concealed by the stock. It is missing its block and mainspring possibly some other sundry parts. The trigger gaurd serial numbers and reciever serial numbers don't match and a capital letter E is stamped on the side of the trigger gaurd. Other than tang markings there appears to be no other marks on the reciever.
The barrel looks new and unfired, it is Hexagon(not octogon) to round, tapered barrel though it looks as though some-one turned down a full contour hexagon barrel to achieve this. From the thread exstension to the end of the barrel its 30 1/2 inches. The Hex section is 3/4 of inch across each flat and the hex section is 4 1/4 long with no transition. It has been threaded correctly but is only hand tightened to the action. An angular cut has been made on the botton of the breech face to allow the block to roll into position, but the chamber has not yet been reamed. The barrel looks to be .45 caliber as a .50 round ball (.495) just sits on the crown (but I won't know until i slug it.) The barrel work looks to have been done by someone quite a while ago, and it doensn't ecactly look proffesional but then again it is in unfinished condition so its hard to say. Also the barrel looks almost as if it has a liner. There are no markins on the barrel.
Any info on this Action or barrel would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Buck
