Model 10 Experts Needed

Post by avery53 »

I have a nice old 10 that has a problem.
Everything works great, except when chambering a round, it apparantly doesn't line up with the barrel, and the bolt won't close.
If I point the gun up, letting the round go to the rear of the chamber, it goes right in.
I'm wondering if the leaf spring on the top, inside of the chamber has to be bent down forcing the shell to the rear, could this be the problem?
I have had it all apart and did a thorough cleaning, parts do not seem to have much wear on them. I don't think this gun was shot a whole lot.
Any advice would be really appreciated
Oh yeah, using 2-1/2" shells.

Thanks

Hi, This gun is one of the first made model 10's, 1908-1910, it doesn't even have the model 10 marked on it, or the 12 ga marking.
It definitely has the short chamber.
I never removed the barrel bushing, it was a nice tight fit.

Thanks

The Remington Repeating Shotgun or the Model 1908 "Pump Shotgun" as it is refered to in the 1908-1909 Catalog was always chambered to shoot shells no longer than 2.75" in length.

However, a 1908 2.75" shell and a 2011 2.75" shell do not have the same length both fired and unfired, in my experience.

I have fired modern 2.75" loads in my 4 digit gun without an issue.

Not a recommendation, just my experience.

Well son of a gun, you guys hit it right on the head. The 2-3/4 shells feed and eject perfectly.
The old girl sure has a thump to it with that old hard butt plate though.
I re-measured the chamber, 2-9/16", maybe 2-1/2 was just TOO short.
Thank you kindly
