I aquired a very good nontakedown #4 with a 5 didgit serial # 5302x on underside of barrel behind the 22 marking, top of barrel says "Remington Arms Co. Ilion,N.Y.", no other markings on the rifle except a mark like a backward "J" under th forearm. What were the serial #s of the last pre-1899 model 4s? I do want to know for sure if mine's an antique or not.
Thanks in advence for any information, Ken

Ken:
According to Remington factory records your No. 4 was made in 1897. Those same records indicate the solid frame was discontinued between #s 95,000 and 100,000 with some overlap. I mention the factory records as being the source because they were reconstructed at the factory many years after the production run was completed and are not 100% accurate.
I wouldn't want to lead you down the wrong path, but my No. 4s in that same serial # range are considered as antiques by me. Considering the spirit and intent of the antique classification, most of the No. 4 solid frame rifles certainly qualify.
